ublic art and sculpture is probably the mostexiting and rewarding area of all my work. There’s no feeling quite like that of completing a piece of work and placing it in a public space, after many long hours from initial commissioning, and drawings, through to completion, and watching people approach the piece and start to interact with it.
I was fortunate enough at the start of 2012 to be selected and commissioned by the RSPB for several interesting large pieces for RSPB Minsmere. This proved to be a wonderful project, full of wide-ranging challenges, which I enjoyed approaching head-on. This enabled me to develop and further many fresh techniques, which I have continued to utilize since.
Initially I was intrigued by the prospect of carving large scale accurate bird carvings and wildlife carving on the year clock listening posts, then reading the brief further, became quite exited about designing and carving the ‘skywatch seats’ and ‘story totem’. I’ll never forget the feeling I got seeing a couple lying in the first two skywatching seats ten minutes after installation, as I was driving out of Minsmere! I have since become an RSPB approved supplier, and have delivered another two skywatch seats to RSPB South Essex reserve at West Canvey Marsh.
Village signs are something I’ve always enjoyed as I cycled round East Anglia, and was lucky enough to be commissioned by the Bessingham society for my first one. Bessingham village sign was a thoroughly rewarding experience, and I hope will stand for generations to enjoy.
Sometimes I carve large pieces in situ. This allows the public to see a piece emerge, and brings a special intensity to the carving process with spectators! ‘Silvanus’ (Epping Forest Burial Park) (‘Greenacres Woodland Burials’) was one such example, carved in a one day event, and enjoyed daily since by members of the public. This process works particularly well when sculpting for schools and activity centres, and represents good value for money for the client, as well as being an exiting process for me! All work is covered by public liability insurance.
I am competent in all aspects of public art commissioning, funding and management of projects of any scale, and welcome any enquiries regarding public art commissions, no matter how large or small. Please feel free to contact me to discuss the particulars of your project.
