These are one of my favorite pieces of design work. I designed them initially for RSPB Minsmere in late 2011, largely improvising the design on a smaller scale from a small log, based on some small sketches. The brief was for a series of sculpted outdoor wooden seats, reclined, for people to watch migrating birds, clouds, stars, and the comings and goings of the sky. I was provided with poetic passages, which were burned with pyrography, onto the backs of the seats.
I started by cutting a wedge from the log, to tilt it to an appropriate angle, then cut the perimeter in plan view to an egg shape. I then cut away under the back, and proceeded to sculpt the inside, using tested anthropometric and ergonomic data, while allowing rain to drain effectively, and maintaining aesthetics. I was very pleased with the results.
I carved six initially, for RSPB Minsmere, and have since carved two for RSPB South Essex Marshes, at West Canvey Marshes.
The design has proved very popular, and am now carving them to order for private clients. I also occasionally have one or two for sale, or to show, for people to try out for themselves.
